Prayer — St. Thomas Aquinas
Sweetest Jesus, Body and Blood most Holy,
be the delight and pleasure of my soul,
my strength and salvation in all temptations,
my joy and peace in every trial,
my light and guide in every word and deed,
and my final protection in death. Amen.
Scripture Comparison
The Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels and are often very similar to one another. Look up the following three passages depicting Jesus at the Last Supper, and compare and contrast them. Which one do you like best and why?
- Matthew 26:26-30
- Mark 14:22-26
- Luke 22:14-20

Going Deeper: Passover Origins
At the Last Supper, Jesus was celebrating Passover with his disciples. But where does this feast come from, and why do we use unleavened bread (bread without yeast that doesn’t rise)? Take a look at the book of Exodus in the Old Testament, and read the story of how Moses was finally able to free the Jewish people from their slavery in Egypt:
- Exodus 12:21-42
Discussion
- Jesus is often referred to as the Paschal Lamb (the Lamb of Passover). Why do you think that is?
- How is the blood of Jesus, shed at the crucifixion, like the blood of the lambs used back in Egypt? Who is Jesus saving with his death, and from what?
- How is our Catholic Mass like a Passover seder meal? What does each one commemorate?
- Why is the Eucharist consecrated from unleavened bread?
Action
Set aside some time to bake the type of unleavened bread we see in Exodus and which we still use today in our Catholic Mass for the consecration of the Eucharist. You can use this bread recipe. Note that for personal use at home, some of the instructions can be ignored.
Scripture
John’s is the only Gospel where we see Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. Read the passage and discuss what lesson Jesus is teaching us with his actions. What does Jesus want us to learn from his example and why?
- John 13:1-17
Action
As a family, spend time washing each other’s feet like Jesus did with his disciples at the Last Supper. All you need is a pitcher of water, a towel, and a large bowl or basin. Just pour some water over the bare feet of your loved one and then dry their feet with the towel. By doing so, you are following the model that Jesus gave us.
